This practical resource helps teachers to plan for mathematics across the new curriculum. It has been developed to support schools in applying the Learning Challenge principles to their teaching of mathematics. It is based on the learning challenges from two other resources, namely the "Geography and History Learning Challenge Curriculum" and "Science Learning Challenge Curriculum".

Geography, history and science are normally the “drivers” used in curriculum design, with other subjects brought in where explicit links can be made. Links to mathematics have sometimes been neglected in the past or where they have been made they are sometimes too tenuous to make sense to pupils.

The questions outlined in each year group section match learning challenges from the two resources mentioned above. This allows teachers to extend the questions they ask the children to include mathematical reasoning and problem solving within a meaningful context, all linked to the National Curriculum from September 2014.

At the end of each year group section there is a suggested complete mathematics Learning Challenge that could be taught as a “maths week” or fortnight with a focus on a separate subsidiary challenge each day or over two days.

Each of these Learning Challenges has a suggested “wow” and its own suggested reflection. By using these you will get a more complete level of challenge for the pupils.

This package includes Word, PowerPoint and pdf versions of the resource.
