PLANNING FOR RAPID PROGRESSION IN THE EARLY YEARS

This resource supports teachers and support staff in making ‘fluff free’ and well-focused observations on a child’s journey to the Early Learning Goals. It will help them to stay focused on the more relevant and meaningful parts of learning and development and will enable them to observe and plan for children’s steady progression towards reaching a good level of development and becoming ‘school ready’ by the end of Reception.

The resource will support adults in organising their planning by objective or target, rather than by task, making planning ‘responsive’ to individual children’s needs. The characteristics of effective learning are explored.

The resource explores the concept of mastery of skill and depth of knowledge in the Early Years and re-evaluates what ‘exceeding’ might look like.

The ‘tracking to the goal’ part of the publication, originally developed by Clive Davies, has been augmented and revised, so adults will have a clearer picture of what is required for a child to become, for example, a competent writer.
