EXEMPLIFICATION OF STANDARDS IN WRITING: WORKING AT GREATER DEPTH WITHIN THE EXPECTED STANDARD

LINK TO MAIN PRODUCT PAGE

This resource aims to provide exemplification of progress in writing within each year group over the year and what writing may look like for pupils who meet year group expectations or master them.

The examples are shown annotated and without annotations so that they can be used as CPD opportunities to develop understanding of year group expectations and how to identify progress across the year. They also demonstrate the cyclical nature of the English writing curriculum and how the objectives are revisited until they are securely learned and used in all writing.

The samples used demonstrate the complete move away from formulaic writing, where a list of “ingredients” is included as a measure of meeting objectives, to writing in which words are carefully selected and sentences are considered and appropriate for the purpose and audience. The emphasis on creating effects and impact on the reader is paramount.

The resource makes clear the effectiveness of focusing on covering fewer text types in depth in each year group and building on these, so that by Year 6 pupils have secure knowledge of text type features and can manipulate them to create hybrid texts.

Package includes editable PowerPoint and full colour versions
