Spelling needs to be taught rigorously and systematically, but teaching also needs to engage children and show them that accurate spelling matters. This resource offers some guidance and suggestions as to the development of an effective spelling programme and strategies to raise the profile of spelling across the curriculum.

Spelling has become an area of concern for most schools. The emphasis on accurate spelling in the Interim Assessment Frameworks has meant that some children did not meet the expected standard due to spelling errors. Whilst no child, who is an effective writer in all other aspects, should be penalised so harshly, this has served as a realisation that spelling is not being taught well.
